The feeder insider art & sound new media project expands with a new dimension in the 2017 edition.

10 interviews and 1 new e-book are now online!

WHAT?
feeder insider art & sound investigates the outer world of art and music. The editorial project begins in 2014, inspired by the online activity and communication maintained by feeder.ro over the course of 13 years, the news and event platform that hosts it. Through 10 immersive interviews, readers can see, from the insider’s perspective, the person inside the action, scenes and instances from the creative process, and the life of the 10 interviewed audio and visual artists.
Declining itself in an atypical series of cultural products, feeder insider is a multidisciplinary program for identifying and promoting the creative Romanians and placing them together with key personalities from the creative fields in the world, connecting the local scene to the international one while generating new content. Through the coexistence of text, sound, and image, the experience brought by the online article addresses more senses.

HOW?
To document the approach, the feeder team refers to the artistic product, the creative process, the artist’s relationship with their audience and, where relevant, the feeder site.
As interviewing methods, the conversations alternate between the in-person interview and the online asynchronous interview, depending on the artist’s availability. Observing the key differences between the two interviewing techniques, different, consistent, adaptable results can be obtained. The asynchronous online interview is the research method that increases privacy and at the same time reduces the “interviewer effect” – the question of the dynamics between the interviewer and the interviewee often born from differences or similarities of gender, age, geographical location, intonation, body language and timezone , while dramatically reducing the resources needed for a meeting in person. This type of dialogue has the capacity to improve communication hurdles and to present local and international artists in a multicultural context.

WHY?
The digital age and technology, exponentially more accessible and performing at all times, facilitates new expressions and reinterpretations of contemporary art and music. The relatively simple access to digital production, remixing and reinterpreting tools allows more and more people to express themselves artistically in the online environment.
In the context of a larger number of artists than ever in the history of humanity, feeder identifies the need, both locally and globally, for selection criteria based on empirical research.
Promoting access to digital culture and reading in the digital environment are strategies developed for the European Union’s A2 cultural priorities set out in the Work Plan for Culture 2015-2018.

WHERE?
ONLINE. The feeder insider editorial project is initiated in the online environment and declines itself as a range of physical and virtual products. The internet has had a seismic impact on the art and the music industry. Artists create interesting avatars to be present in the multicultural virtual network and to enter the asynchronous conversation with the public.

WHO?
Save or Cancel via feeder.ro, the “Alternative Nation’s Agency”, a site that for over 13 years has been publishing news and articles from the urban area, alternative events, contemporary art, architecture, music, advertising, design, technology, street art – acting as a platform for communication between a selection of local and international artists and their local audience. The quality of the event selection and promoted news helped the feeder to become a reference for both teenagers and young people looking for events, as well as for the young educated adults living in the urban environment. The expansion of the spectrum of activities is a natural step to develop the conversation the feeder maintains with its readers and partners.

THE INTERVIEWS

feeder insider w/ AEUL

If the Romanian graffiti community would have a key-symbol, then surely it would be the piggy-dog created by AEUL. Present uptown and downtown, on the streets and on the main road, the piggy established itself a real reputation on the urban scene.

“The character was always there, in the subconscious, and one day it decided to break free, and like any other creature it felt the need to multiply, it wants to be all over, I am more or less an instrument, a decorator of the universe. The universe has the same destiny like ours, just more colored.” – AEUL

feeder insider w/ Miss Kittin

Miss Kittin is Caroline Hervé, originally from Grenoble, France, one of the most appreciated electronic music DJs. Her powerful selections and recognizable voice create exceptional dance-floor moments. Multi-talented Caroline is expressing herself through her selections and productions, singing, painting and writing. She is now working on her 4th album, to be released on Nobody’s Bizzniss, the label she runs since 2004.
We are delighted to introduce this conversation with graceful Miss Kittin, ahead of her Mysteryland Festival performance.

“I always tell the story but when I went to my first rave, it blew my mind. A music I never heard before, a way to live music I never experienced before. I went back home, saw all the people in the street going to work and I knew I would have to work very very hard to write my own path, because I could never fit in a regular life.” – Miss Kittin

feeder insider w/ Subb-an

Born and bred in Birmingham, Subb-an is a refreshing sound in today’s dance music scene. With an atypical background of sound design, Subb-an impressed promoters when he was first booked as a live performance at Rainbow Courtyard. His live set impressed and he became a resident DJ at the time. Subsequently, he joined Rainbow founder and launched the long-running One Records focusing on house/techno. We had a chance to chat with Subb-an, after Sunwaves, and pick his brain regarding today’s dance music culture, One Records, playfulness in the music industry and the power and influence Fabric has had on the general public.

“A regular night in any city is paramount to educating people in music and offering a place for people to release themselves from whatever it is they need to have a release from.” – Subb-an

feeder insider w/ SAINT MACHINE

Marilena Oprescu Singer, known as The Reverend Mother or SAINT MACHINE, is a multimedia artist and author of immersive and participatory installations that investigate biological processes, our relationships with technology or public space. We are pleased to talk to Mari about FEED ME, ACUM [NOW], and the latest installation Hybrid Sensorium, on display at Ars Electronica 2017.

“Hybrid Sensorium tests the visitors’ willingness to abandon their biological needs in exchange for digital content. At Ars Electronica I played with the interruption of the breathing pace. The idea is very simple, to interact with the installation, you must first put your head completely into the capsule. Inside, a membrane is breathing with you in real time. The intimate sound of your breathing is amplified outside the installation, on public display.” – SAINT MACHINE

feeder insider w/ Mona Nicoară

Mona Nicoara is the artistic director of fARAD, a documentary film festival that electrified Arad in recent years. Having made multiple award-winning documentary films, including “Our School” (selected at over 60 festivals around the world and screened in the USA, Switzerland, and Romania), Mona Nicoara has been working and living in New York since 1995, from where she has also responded to this interview.

“[…] I’m going to reduce my recommendation to one: start in the cinema. Not in front of the computer or in front of the TV, no matter how ridiculously big the device is – but in the theatre, in front of a large screen, in the dark, next to strangers who go through the same emotions as you for an hour and a half or two. It’s something totally different.
Unfortunately, documentaries not very accessible in this way in regular cinema programming. But we have more and more festivals, many exceptionally curated, where documentaries can be experienced in the cinema: fARAD this week, Astra the next, One World in March and TIFF in June…” – Mona Nicoară

feeder insider w/ Alexandra

The first thing you can say when listening to Alexandra‘s DJ sets, regardless of the location, crowd or sound system, is that you cannot place her style under some specific electronic genre. She’s part of that rare breed of DJs who are first and foremost record selectors. With a presence in the house & techno underground for quite a few years now, you definitely crossed paths with her on some well-known dance floor, as she travelled to Berlin, Tokyo, New York, London, Moscow, Paris, Lima, Miami. From 2016, she teamed with her good friend Vera to start her own imprint: Melliflow Records, the label that breathes Alexandra’s warm & joyful personality through its releases, signed by the likes of Spacetravel, AK41 or VRAC.

“For a podcast I take time to choose the tracks, I am designing a compilation, I have more time to search for ideas and inspiration and to arrange and rearrange the tracks. At the club it’s all in a blink of an eye, no time to think, only time to react and to spontaneously choose the next track, I never know which direction I will go and where the situation will take me musically, it’s all improvisation and experiment.” – Alexandra

feeder insider w/ Butch

This week, marking the 124 interview in the feeder insider series, we have the big pleasure to welcome the mysterious Bülent Gürler aka Butch. He lives and works in Mainz, Germany, but his music is travel all around the world and has been released by a lot of well-known labels including Moon Harbour, Visionquest, Hot Creations, Desolat, Watergate and Rekids. Last year, Butch has added to that list a release on Seth Troxler’s Tuskegee imprint titled Jack Your Body. His own label, Otherside, launches next year an EP featuring himself and Ricardo Villalobos, which we’ve already reviewed.
Despite the extensive discography, however, he regards himself outwardly at least as more of a DJ than a producer. In tandem, Butch is running a residency series titled Down The Rabbit Hole at Watergate Berlin.

Let’s dive into Butch’s creative universe!

“Music always talks about stuff that we don’t know because if we knew it, we could put it into words. I think that’s why people love music because it helps us grow and get to know more nuanced understanding of reality and ourselves. I share that love for music so I think that you can tell that listening to my songs and that connects the listeners and me.” – Butch

In the midst of preparing for the film he is soon directing, A Shinning Flaw, and producing a new project shot in Shanghai, Erwin was kind to answer our questions.

“I am very much into incorporating all the different media. For my latest work Shanghai I have moving images, still photography. The combination of different mediums makes it possible to create a complete Erwin Olaf experience, you can get across the idea of an artist by making use of all the senses.” – Erwin Olaf

It was by far the best experience with a festival I ever had. Everybody was just super excited, so amazingly talented themselves and everybody wanted to help me paint the mural, this resulted in finishing the piece twice as fast! Also, the festival was amazing and the food everywhere was super nice!” – Hedof
